In an age when the typical off road bike is getting ever more trick, and ever more tall the now defunct Honda CRF230L is a refreshingly simple and accessible way into dirt biking. It is one of the few that a shorter rider, like myself, can even get on and off with relative ease.
Honda CRF230L..simple, tough, capableTherefore is is the ideal mount for an off-road novice, the easy going nature of the bike disguises a very capable machine, The single cylinder air cooled motor is simple and provides plenty off grunt when on green lane or rutted track. On the road the bike is not at all fast, but has enough speed to carry from section to section without being under the feet of the general traffic.
Once off road the bikes long travel suspension and light, low slung weight lends itself to covering the terrain ever more confidently. I really thought the bike was excellent and if you trusted it, I was amazed what kind of ground it could traverse with ease.
It is completely idiot friendly to ride…So while not the latest thing it is a great first serious off road bike and I would whole heartedly reccomend one to anybody thinking of taking up the sport

Yes, but no cash, no space at the moment. I really did like the CRF.

I think they were only destined for the States, as 230s in Britain typically entered offroad dealers as unregistered kids bikes, the biggest in the CRF70, CRF150 range.
CRF250Ls are a very different beast to the 230F.
250L is modern fuel injected road engine, with modern softly set suspension. Clutch is road based and lasts 3 minutes if you get stuck on a hill! Gear lever sticks out too far and is very strong, so prone to break shaft if you have a slow speed off.
230F is oldfashioned aircooled with a tough clutch that puts up with years of abuse by kids! Brakes are old-fashioned too, rear is a drum which fills with water and becomes useless. Suspension is stiffer than 250L, and bike handles offroad more like trials than trail.

Welcome to the forum and I bow to your deeper knowledge of the off road machines. My experience is limited here to the 230 I rode. I had the chance to ride a 250L that day too, but to be honest they were simply too tall for a stumpy like me to feel confident on with no prior off road experience. I really enjoyed the 230 to be honest, it was ideal for the novice
